The problem determine whether a given volume preserving diffeomorphism is ergodic or not has been studied extensively in the context of partially hyperbolic dynamics. However, there is reason to believe that the "right" context is that of dominated splittings - a notion weaker than partial hyperbolicity. We give an approach to the problem in this setting and illustrate it with some specific results.
